Cardinal's first game didn't go as planned on the scoreboard but shows promise for the future!

Commonwealth Cardinals FC made their USL League Two debut in a 3-1 loss to Northern Virginia FC at Virginia Revolution Sportsplex in Leesburg Sunday night. Costly mistakes led to at least 2 of the 3 goals but, similar to the friendly a few weeks ago in Fredericksburg against Ashland Town FC, the Reds came away looking like the better team, especially in the second half.

Also like the friendly, this was the first time many of the RedBirds players had taken the pitch together as a unit outside of training. While obviously a bit frustrating, Coach Baez said this gives him a better idea of what the team needs to focus on in practice before next week’s mid-week match in Baltimore at Christos FC.

The Cardinals’ lone goal (and their first ever in USL League Two play) came from a penalty a few minutes into the second half which the Reds’ #9 Juan Ballas easily slid by Nova’s keeper.

The Reds get back to training this week at the Fredericksburg Field House before heading to Baltimore next Wednesday and visit co-League Two new boys Patuxent FA on May 15. They finish the current stretch of away days at Virginia Beach United May 21 before returning home to face Lionsbridge in Fredericksburg May 28.

You have to start somewhere, and the ‘Birds seem to have a solid foundation to build on a little over 90 minutes into the season.

Onward and upward!
